Barretstown

The one thing worth knowing about Barretstown is Dundalk. At that track, over distances between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs, the horse transforms from ordinary into genuinely capable. It has won three of its twenty-two races there—a 14% win rate, nearly one and a half times better than its overall record. Dundalk brought Barretstown its first career win back in February 2023, and more tellingly, it was there that the horse last won eleven months ago, in September 2025. That is a long drought elsewhere, which makes you wonder if shipping the horse to that particular track might be worth trying again. It clearly suits something about the place—the surface, perhaps, or the layout—enough to make the difference between a also-ran and a winner.

Charlie O'Dwyer has been Barretstown's most regular pilot, but the numbers tell an uncomfortable story: one win from nineteen rides at just 5%, barely half the horse's overall win rate. Trainer Conor O'Dwyer, based at Friarstown in Kildare, has sent out four winners this season from the yard, so there is activity and form there, but Barretstown itself has been in a real rut of late. Six straight races without a win, with nothing better than a seventh-place finish in that run, suggests the horse is running out of opportunities or out of luck, or quite possibly both. At eight years old, Barretstown is not finished, but it is running on fumes—a solid plodder whose window for proving itself has largely closed, waiting for the kind of day and place where it remembers how to win.
