That said, there is a faint thread of encouragement buried in those numbers. The most recent finish was a 5th, which is the best result of the six, and before that a 7th — so while the wins are nowhere to be seen, the trajectory is at least pointing in a slightly better direction. It would be a stretch to call it a turnaround, but it is worth noting.
Bargain Hunter races out of D J Jeffreys' yard in Hinton on the Green, Worcestershire, a small operation that has still managed to send out three winners this season — proof that the stable knows how to get a horse to the line first when the conditions are right. The question is whether Bargain Hunter can be the next one to join that tally. Having raced just eleven days ago, the horse is clearly fit and active, and the yard are evidently still looking for the race that suits.
At this stage, Bargain Hunter is a horse that asks more questions than it answers. But every winner was once winless, and with the yard still finding form this season, the search for that elusive first victory goes on.
