He is trained by George Boughey at Newmarket, one of the sport's great training centres, and the yard has been in excellent form this season — 99 winners and counting is a serious number, the kind of output that tells you horses are leaving that yard fit, well-prepared, and ready to run. Being part of a yard firing on all cylinders is no small thing for a horse stepping back up after a winter break.
Baltic Fleet has been off the track since that Yarmouth win eight months ago, which is a long time between races. But Boughey has spoken encouragingly about him, describing the horse as progressive last year and nearly ready to return. The plan is a run at Bath on Easter Sunday, and crucially, the trainer believes he will stay over longer distances — meaning he has the stamina to cope as races get tougher and the trips get longer. That is often where three-year-olds start to fulfil their potential, when they find a distance that suits them and everything clicks into place. Baltic Fleet, on this evidence, looks like a horse worth keeping an eye on as the season gets going.
