Balon d'Or

The place that has been kindest to him is Chester, a tight, winding circuit in Cheshire that suits certain horses down to the ground and utterly baffles others. Balon d'Or has run there 11 times and won twice — a win rate of 18%, or roughly 1 in every 5 or 6 visits. In racing terms, that is what people mean when they call a horse a course specialist. Something about Chester's peculiar, almost circular track clearly suits the way he moves. His last win came there in September 2025, around seven months ago, and it is not hard to imagine trainer Simon Dow keeping one eye on the Chester fixture list whenever planning his next move.

Dow is based at Epsom in Surrey — one of the most storied venues in British racing — and his yard has sent out 13 winners this season, which shows it is in decent form. He noted early in Balon d'Or's career that the horse seemed versatile in terms of ground conditions, and the numbers largely back that up. On normal ground, Balon d'Or has won 2 from 9 races, a rate of 22%, or just over 1 in 4 — his best surface by some distance.

The honest part of the picture is his recent form. The last six runs read 5-6-7-10-6-7, which means he has finished in the bottom half of the field in all of them, and he has not won in any of those six outings. He raced just yesterday, which tells you he is active and fit, but the results have dried up. Most of his racing has been at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the British racing ladder — competitive enough to mean something, but not the top tier. He has won 2 of his 13 races at that level, roughly 1 in 6.

Chester remains the obvious key. If the yard — the trainer and his team — point him back there, it would not be the worst bet in the world.
