At Class 4, Balking is competing at a decent club level — not the elite races, but competitive enough that beating rivals is genuinely hard work. In six races at that level, the record stands at zero wins from six attempts, which tells its own story. Some horses find their level and click; Balking has found its level and is still searching for that click.

Trainer Dianne Sayer operates out of Hackthorpe in Cumbria, a small but active yard that has sent out 15 winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the line in front. Balking, though, has not been one of the success stories. That said, Sayer clearly has faith — the horse raced just yesterday, which means the team is keeping it fresh and busy, still looking for the right opportunity to unlock something. At eight, Balking is not young, and the window for a first career win is narrowing. But the fact it is still racing says something about the horse's durability, if not its ability to trouble the judge.
