What is worth noting is the yard behind the horse. Trainer Alan King operates out of Wroughton in Wiltshire, and his team has sent out 58 winners already this season — that is a yard in serious form, with the horses, staff, and confidence that comes with that kind of output. When a trainer is firing at that rate, even a horse still searching for its first win is coming to the track with experienced support behind it. King knows how to place horses to give them their best chance, so it will be interesting to see where Atlas Mountain lines up next.
Having raced just one day ago, this horse is very much in the thick of its campaign right now. The question is whether that third-place finish signals a horse that is starting to figure things out, or whether it was simply a fortunate day in a weaker race. Three runs is a small sample — plenty of horses take time to develop at three — and with a top yard pulling the strings, Atlas Mountain is not without hope of getting off the mark before long.
