The recent form makes for mixed reading. A second-place finish sits in there, which shows the ability is still present, but either side of it are some forgettable efforts — finishing 18th in one race is the kind of result that suggests the horse either had a bad day or was simply outclassed. With no win in the last six races and a career record of zero from seventeen, it is hard to make a strong case that a breakthrough is imminent.
Peter Carberry has had five attempts to get Atlantic Wonder over the line and has drawn a blank each time. That is not necessarily a reflection on the jockey — sometimes a partnership just does not click, or the horse simply does not have a win in it at this level. The trainer, A J Martin, operates out of Summerhill in County Meath and has sent out 15 winners already this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get horses winning. Atlantic Wonder, though, has so far been the exception rather than the rule.
What is worth noting is that the horse raced just one day ago and is still active, which means A J Martin has not given up on finding the right opportunity. At nine years old, time is not exactly on Atlantic Wonder's side, but the fact it keeps turning up is something in itself. Whether that first win ever comes remains the open question.
