The yard behind the horse is Paul Traynor's operation in Templepatrick, County Antrim — a smaller stable that has sent out one winner so far this season. That context matters. This isn't a powerhouse training operation with horses regularly troubling the judges, which means expectations need to be calibrated accordingly. Traynor's runners tend to be working within tighter margins, and getting a horse competitive enough to finish in the top three, as Astley has done twice from nine attempts, is genuinely something. Still, two places from nine races — winning roughly zero times in every nine outings — means Astley remains a horse that has yet to put its best foot forward when it counts most.

Whether that changes soon is the interesting question. At six years old, Astley isn't a youngster still finding its feet, but it's also not at the end of the road. The third-place finish in recent form is the kind of result that keeps hope alive.
