Arnaz

The distance range where he looks most at home is seven furlongs to a mile, and that's where his one career win came. He's run ten races over those trips and won once, which works out at roughly 1 in every 10 — not a brilliant return, but at least it's where his solitary moment of glory arrived. The bigger puzzle is his record at Class 5, which is the level he competes at most often. Fourteen races at that grade and not a single win. That's a horse that the handicapper and the opposition keep finding out, even at what should be a manageable level.

Tom Marquand has been in the saddle seven times without a win, which won't be doing either of their confidence much good. Marquand is a rider capable of winning at the top level, so his inability to get Arnaz home says more about the horse than the jockey. Mark Loughnane trains him from Rock Farm in Worcestershire, and the yard is clearly in decent form — 25 winners on the board this season — which makes Arnaz something of an outlier in what is otherwise a productive string. Loughnane knows what a winning horse looks like, and right now Arnaz isn't quite fitting that description. He raced just yesterday, so he's firmly in work and being kept busy — the team clearly believe there's a race to be won somewhere. Whether Brighton magic can strike twice remains to be seen.
