Johnston is clear that Arisaig is a horse who needs to be ridden with patience and restraint, held up and allowed to find her stride rather than fired into the race early. That nuance matters, because when jockey Jamie Spencer has been aboard — eight times in total — they have only won once together, roughly 1 in every 8 rides. The talent is undeniably there; getting it to the surface consistently is the ongoing puzzle.

Her best days have come on fast, dry ground. She won at Goodwood in July 2024, and that track appears to hold a special significance — Johnston is already eyeing a Listed race there, a level just below the very top tier of British racing, as her next target. It is a race he believes she probably should have won last season but for being caught in traffic at a crucial moment. Those are the margins that separate a winner from a hard-luck story, and Arisaig has a few of those on her record.

The bigger picture is genuinely ambitious. At Class 2 level — the second-highest grade in Britain — she has run nine times without winning, which sounds disappointing until Johnston hints at why: she has not stayed in training simply to pick up mid-level prizes. If a big black-type victory — the kind that enhances a horse's breeding value and reputation permanently — can be secured, the team are prepared to step her up into Group 2 company, where only the very best compete. Raced just yesterday and still active, Arisaig is a horse whose best chapter may not yet be written.
