The headline moment came on 10 May 2024, when Arctic Thunder won a Class 2 race at Ascot — one of the top races in Britain, at one of its most prestigious venues. That is not something many horses manage. It followed a first career win at Kempton Park in January that year, suggesting 2024 was shaping up as a breakthrough season. At distances between seven furlongs and a mile, where it clearly operates best, the record improves sharply: 2 wins from 8 races, a 25% win rate, meaning it wins roughly 1 in every 4 races at those trips. That is a horse with a genuine sweet spot.

The problem is what has happened since. Arctic Thunder has not won in its last six races, with form reading 10th, 4th, 3rd, 4th, 12th, and 7th in reverse order. That Ascot win now sits 24 months in the past, and there is no obvious sign of another one coming. It has also been racing mostly at Class 3 level — a step below those top-tier races — without managing a single win from eight attempts at that level. That is a curious combination: capable of winning a Class 2 at Ascot, yet unable to win a Class 3 anywhere. It hints at a horse that occasionally produces something special but cannot do so consistently.

It is trained by Ed Walker at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, part of a yard that has sent out 80 winners already this season — a busy, high-performing operation that clearly knows how to place a horse to win. Arctic Thunder raced just one day ago, so it is very much still active and the team has not given up on finding the right opportunity. Whether that Ascot form still represents what this horse can do on its best day, or whether that moment has passed, is the question worth watching.
