The horse performs best when the ground is fast and dry, winning 2 of 5 races on those surfaces — a 40 percent win rate that is genuinely strong. On slower, wetter ground, Approval struggles badly, which is a real constraint in Britain's climate. Distance-wise, the sweet spot appears to be the mile-and-a-quarter to mile-and-a-half range, where it has won once from four attempts. At shorter or longer trips, results have been ordinary.

Tom Marquand is Approval's regular pilot, and the pair have struck up a productive partnership: two wins from nine rides together, a 22 percent win rate that outperforms the horse's overall record. Trainer E McNamara, based in County Limerick, has been sending out a productive yard this season with 22 winners, so the stable is in good form even if Approval itself has slipped off the boil. Winning a Class 2 race, the sort of high-level contest that separates genuine horses from plodders, proved Approval belongs at that level — but the two-year drought since then raises the question of whether injury, age, or simply harder opposition has caught up. If the ground dries out and Marquand is aboard, there could be another victory waiting.
