Another Investment

Trainer Nigel Tinkler, who runs a yard at Langton in North Yorkshire that has sent out 37 winners this season, knows this better than anyone. He describes Another Investment as "a bit moody"—a horse who only comes right at certain times and needs everything to fall precisely into place. The faster the pace, the better, especially at six furlongs, though ideally he wants to run seven furlongs. The problem is that races at that distance rarely unfold the way he needs them to. When conditions do align, though, he shows real ability. Over fast, dry ground, he has won 2 of his 11 races (18%), nearly triple his overall win rate. York is his spiritual home, a track where he has won 2 of 14 races and seems to run with greater enthusiasm than elsewhere.

His most recent win came at Doncaster on 28 June 2025, fourteen months ago—a long drought. In his last six outings, he has finished fifth, sixth, second, second, second, and tenth, the kind of run that tests any horse's value. Yet he has been placed in 17 of his 54 races, suggesting he is a consistent performer even when the win is elusive. His most frequent jockey, Alex Jary, has partnered him to just one win from 13 rides, though that understates the partnership. Tinkler has noted that Another Investment "has an engine" and has been "a bit unlucky"—which is perhaps the eternal refrain of those who handle horses that live in the middle tiers of the sport: talented enough to frustrate, too limited to break through.
