The recent form is actually encouraging. Finishing second twice and third once in its last six races suggests this is a horse in decent shape, not one that is struggling at the bottom of the barrel. Racing at Class 4 level — the fourth tier of British racing, a solid but unspectacular rung on the ladder — it has run four times at that level without a win. At some point, a horse this consistent has to convert one of those placed efforts into a victory, and when it does, it probably will not come as a great surprise to anyone watching closely.
What gives the team reason for optimism is the calibre of the yard behind this horse. Trained by the partnership of Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, based up in Milnathort in Perth and Kinross, this is a stable that clearly knows what it is doing right now — 49 winners sent out this season alone. Russell in particular is one of the most respected trainers in Scottish racing, and having that level of support and expertise around a horse that has not yet won is not a small thing. Good yards do not lose patience easily, and they tend to know when a horse is ready to deliver.
Another High Five raced just yesterday, which means it is firmly in the middle of its campaign. The question is whether the right race comes along at the right moment. Three places from seven races says there is genuine ability here — it just needs everything to fall into place on the day.
