Anglesey Lad

The recent form tells an interesting story. In his last six races he has finished 3rd, 2nd, 4th, 2nd, 5th, and 4th — reading that backwards, you can see a horse gradually figuring things out and creeping closer to the winner's enclosure. Scott Dixon, who trains him from his yard in Rolleston, Nottinghamshire, is genuinely excited. Dixon's team has sent out 33 winners this season, so they know what a horse in form looks like — and they believe Anglesey Lad fits the bill. Dixon points to a run at Brighton just last week, where the horse wore blinkers for the first time and responded immediately, pushing hard from the front of the race rather than dawdling out of the stalls as he had been doing. The blinkers, it seems, solved a specific problem: he simply wasn't switching on quickly enough.

There is also a telling detail about his rating. Anglesey Lad competes mostly at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, where his official mark of 54 puts him among horses of similar ability. But Dixon believes that on his best days he is genuinely a 65-rated horse — and if that is true, he is currently running in races he should be competitive in, perhaps even winning. That gap between his official mark and his real ability is exactly the kind of edge that trainers look for.

The other piece of the puzzle is distance. Dixon is clear that five furlongs is too sharp for him — he needs time to warm into a race — and that stepping up to six furlongs on a more open, galloping track will play to his strengths. Jockey Laura Pearson has ridden him six times without a win, but she has seen the improvement first-hand and the partnership has grown through that experience. Anglesey Lad raced just yesterday, so a return is coming soon. When the right race, the right distance, and the right track line up, this is a horse that looks overdue.
