Amathus

The conditions matter enormously with Amathus. On fast, dry ground it transforms — 5 wins from just 20 races (25%, or one in four) is a remarkable conversion rate for any horse at any level. That is not a coincidence; that is a horse with a very specific set of preferences, and Chamings has clearly learned to read them. When the ground dries out in summer, Amathus becomes a genuine threat. When it does not, the record tells a different story.

Brighton is the track that has been kindest to this horse. The first career win came there back in August 2022, and the most recent — last September — came there too. Brighton's famously undulating, switchback track suits certain horses in ways that are hard to explain but impossible to argue with once you have seen the numbers. Amathus is one of those horses, and the yard has been smart enough to keep going back.

At a distance of seven furlongs to a mile, Amathus wins roughly 1 in every 5 races (19% across 27 starts at those trips), which is where almost all of the action has been. Regular partner David Probert has ridden the horse 11 times for just 1 win together — that 9% return suggests the partnership has not always clicked, though the sample is large enough to be telling.

The recent form reads 2-9-13-6-1-6 (most recent first), which is patchy, but that second place at the head of the sequence shows the ability is still there. Raced just yesterday, and with Chamings' yard in decent nick — 9 winners already this season — Amathus is clearly being kept busy. For a nine-year-old, that in itself is a small story worth telling.
