Amalfi Skyline

Most of Amalfi Skyline's racing has been at Class 5 level, which is the entry-level tier of British racing — the kind of races where horses are competitive without being exceptional. At that level, it has won 1 from 8, or 12% of the time, which is actually a reasonable conversion rate for the grade. The problem is that the wins simply haven't come. Recent form reads 6-5-blank-2-blank-3, which translates as: a few near-misses and a lot of mid-pack finishes, with the blanks representing races where it didn't make the frame at all. Not a disaster, but not a horse that is threatening to string anything together either.

Harry Bannister has been the regular partner, riding Amalfi Skyline in 7 of its 13 races and picking up that sole win together — a win rate of 14% between them, or 1 from 7, which is slightly better than the horse's overall record and suggests the partnership at least gives it its best chance. The operation behind the horse is Barry Brennan's yard in Upper Lambourn, Berkshire, a racing village that punches well above its size and has produced 6 winners already this season. Brennan's team clearly know what they are doing; the question is whether Amalfi Skyline has another winning day left in it.

At seven, it is not young, and 28 months is a long time to be chasing a repeat. But it raced yesterday, which means the yard — the team — haven't given up on it. Horses that keep appearing on racecards without winning tend to be doing something right in training, or at least enough to keep their place in the yard. Whether Hereford and a cold January day represent a peak Amalfi Skyline will never reach again, or simply a preview of something still to come, is the small, lingering question its record leaves open.
