What is worth noting is the stable behind him. Ed Walker's yard in Upper Lambourn has sent out 80 winners this season alone, which puts it firmly among the busier and more successful operations in British racing. When a yard is operating at that level, the horses coming through it tend to be given every chance to develop properly. A fifth-place finish on debut from a yard like this is no cause for alarm — plenty of good horses needed a run or two before they worked out what racing was actually about.
With only one race behind him and another likely just around the corner, the honest answer is that Alfred Wallace is still an unknown quantity. Whether that fifth place was a near-miss or simply the start of a learning curve, the next run will tell us a great deal more.
