The recent form makes for interesting reading. Stripping out the 11th-place finish — an obvious off-day that every horse is allowed — the pattern is one of consistent placed efforts: second, third, second, then the win. That is a horse gradually finding its level, building into form, and eventually converting. The 14% win rate, roughly one win in every seven races, is modest but not alarming for a three-year-old still learning the job.
The one relationship worth watching is the one with jockey Wayne Lordan, who has partnered Alba Chiara in five of her seven races without landing a winner together. That is not a damning statistic in isolation — plenty of partnerships take time — but it does mean the pair are still searching for that breakthrough as a team. The winning ride in September was the moment that changes the dynamic, and both horse and rider will be hoping it is the first of several.
Lupini's yard has had a productive season, sending out 15 winners, which tells you this is not a stable running on empty. Alba Chiara returns after roughly six months off, and the question with any horse coming back from that kind of break is whether the freshness works for them or against them. Given she won last time she lined up, she returns with something to build on rather than something to prove.
