The recent form makes for mixed reading. That second place a couple of runs back showed genuine ability, but the three sevens and an eighth either side of it suggest inconsistency is the main obstacle right now. Trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis out of Lambourn — one of British racing's most famous training villages — Ahead Of Fashion operates mainly at Class 4 level, mid-tier racing where the competition is solid without being elite. From five races at that level, the win rate sits at zero from five, which is a pattern worth noting. The horse clearly has enough quality to be placed, but converting that into a win has proved elusive.
There is something to cling onto, though. Ffrench Davis's yard has sent out 12 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. The fact that Ahead Of Fashion raced just yesterday and remains active suggests the team still believes a first win is close. In racing, patience is everything, and a horse that keeps placing is one that keeps knocking on the door. Eventually, that door tends to open.
