Aggagio

The headline number is the Goodwood one. He has won 4 of his 17 races at that track — nearly 1 in every 4 — which is the kind of record that makes trainers circle the fixture list in pen rather than pencil. His most recent win came there just eleven months ago, in June 2025. But Goodwood alone does not explain him. The deeper quirk is his relationship with wet ground. On soft or muddy going, Aggagio has won 5 of just 11 races — that is 45%, nearly half, which is extraordinary for any horse at any level. His trainer Gary Moore has been clear-eyed about this: the ground has to be soft enough, or it is not worth the trip. That is not a weakness, it is a specialism. Plenty of horses run in all conditions and win nothing.

Moore, who trains alongside his son Josh at their yard in Lower Beeding, West Sussex, has been sending out winners at a serious rate this season — 99 from their base this year alone. Caoilin Quinn rides Aggagio most often and the partnership works: 3 wins from 14 races together, just over 1 in every 5. After the Haydock win in April 2023 — a Class 2 on a day when the yard backed their judgement to travel north — Quinn was generous in crediting Josh Moore for the tactics, saying the instruction was simply to be positive and pop him out in front. It worked.

A fall over fences at Plumpton in early 2024 knocked his confidence, and the form since reflects that — no win in his last 6 races, with a couple of mid-pack finishes mixed in with some encouraging placed efforts. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much still active. The task now is straightforward: find wet ground, find Goodwood, and let him do what he does. When those conditions align, he has shown he is still capable.
