What is encouraging is that when Agamemnon did break his duck at Wolverhampton three months ago, he got the job done, and he has shown enough promise in his second and third runs to suggest he is not a complete non-runner in this game. Trained by Richard Hughes at Upper Lambourn — a yard that has already sent out 60 winners this season, so clearly one that knows what it is doing — the horse has the infrastructure and expertise around him to potentially improve. At this stage of his career, a young horse's record matters far less than the talent he shows and the direction of his form. Agamemnon is still in the mix, still racing, and still learning. The next few months will tell whether that May win was a sign of things to come or a flash in the pan.
