That is actually a respectable conversion rate at that trip, and it is worth noting because it suggests the horse is not without ability when conditions suit. The problem is translating that potential into results. African Spirit competes mainly at Class 5, the bread-and-butter level of British racing, and even there the wins have not come.

Trainer Ian Williams, based in Worcestershire, has had a productive season — 96 winners is a serious total that marks him out as one of the more consistent trainers in the game. The fact that a yard operating at that volume has not been able to unlock another win from African Spirit says something about where the horse currently sits. That said, African Spirit raced just yesterday and remains in active training, so the team clearly believes there is still a race to be won somewhere.
