A Wave Of The Sea

The most striking thing about this horse is what it does at Kilbeggan. Two wins from just six races there is remarkable by any measure — that is winning 1 in every 3 races at that particular track, which would be the envy of horses with far flashier careers. For context, its overall win rate across everywhere else is far thinner. Kilbeggan is clearly where this horse feels at home, and its last victory came there as recently as September 2025. At ten years old, it is still racing, still placing, and raced just yesterday.

The wet stuff brings out the best in it, too. On soft or muddy ground, it has won 2 of its 12 races — around 1 in 6 — which is more than double its overall rate. When conditions are heavy and the ground is pulling at the hooves of lesser horses, A Wave Of The Sea finds something extra. Put it at Kilbeggan on a wet day and the form book starts to look very different indeed.

The past six races have not produced a win, and regular partner Simon Torrens is still searching for his first victory from 11 rides together — though it is worth noting that many of those outings have come in Class 1 company, the very top tier of the sport, where this horse has yet to score from three attempts. Stepping back down in grade has historically been when the results improve.

Trainer J P Broderick has sent out two winners this season from an undisclosed yard, and A Wave Of The Sea remains part of an active string. Previous trainer Joseph O'Brien spoke warmly about the horse's toughness and honesty — describing it as one that "turns up and runs its race" — and that reputation holds. Three wins and nine places from 40 races means this horse has been in the money almost a third of the time across its career. It is not a horse that quits. At ten, still racing, still placing, that counts for something.
